Ask a bunch of random people on the street what a Libertarian is and you'll probably discover most of them don't know! But even though many of them can't put it into words, plenty of people like what the Libertarian mindset is all about.

You've probably heard of the Libertarian Party. You may even like some of its members - like Texas Congressman Ron Paul and former Judge and current FOX News Analyst Andrew Napolitano.

But do you really know what a Libertarian is? And could you be one without even knowing it?

Some people think the Libertarian Party took a few ideas from the Republican and Democratic parties and set up shop. However, that isn't the case. Libertarians are very different from both Liberals and Conservatives.

The word "Libertarian" comes from the word "liberty". In essence, Libertarians want liberty, or freedom, from the government. In fact, if Libertarians had an official slogan it might be "stay out of it," because that's exactly what they want - the freedom to do what they want, without the government getting involved in every little detail.

According to Libertarians, you should be able to do whatever you want with your life - as long as you're not hurting anyone in the process. And in return, you should be willing to tolerate whatever other people do - as long as they're not hurting you.

As a result, Libertarians want:

- Limited government.

They believe the federal government should be as small as possible. Libertarians believe in utilizing privatized services, instead of having a government agency for everything. They also believe in having fewer government regulations - especially when it comes to businesses. Libertarians believe the economy will truly thrive if business owners have the right to do whatever they want with their businesses. After all, they're the ones taking the risk!

- Lower taxes.

In conjunction with wanting a limited government, Libertarians also believe most taxes are a complete waste of money. They believe too much of your money is spent on unnecessary government programs.

- Fewer government welfare programs.

Libertarians believe you should have the right to choose who gets your money - instead of paying a fortune to support the federal welfare system. Instead, Libertarians believe most welfare should be charity-based.

- Less war.

Most Libertarians only believe in using violence for self-defense purposes.

- Legalized drugs.

Ron Paul has specifically come out and said he believes drugs should be legalized and regulated just like alcohol is. According to some Libertarians - including Paul and Napolitano - the "War on Drugs" is a waste of government money and only incites unnecessary violence.

So, how popular are the Libertarian ideas?

According to the Libertarian Party, there are more than 250,000 registered Libertarian voters stretched out across all 50 states.
